The issue of the status of BNO holders has again raised its head in January 2015 with the lobby group BritishHongKong arguing for the right to live in the United Kingdom. The issue has been replied to by the FCO as to how they view BNO holders as follows.

British nationals in Australia
There are about 1.2 million British nationals (including dual nationals) living in Australia, and more than 620,000 British nationals visit Australia each year for the purposes of tourism. The British consulates in Australia help by providing advice, consular assistance and support to all British nationals when things do go wrong.
British nationals in Thailand
More than 900,000 British nationals visit Thailand each year and there are about 50,000 British nationals who live and work in Thailand. Only a small number of these British nationals need help from the British Embassy each year.
British nationals in Spain
More than 12 million British nationals each year travel to Spain for recreation and business. It is now estimated that more than 800,000 British nationals live and work in Spain for all or part of the year. There are a small number of British nationals both expat and tourists who need assistance from the British consulates in Spain each year.
Travel Advice : USA
More than 3.8 million British Nationals visit the US each year without much incident. The US Visa Waiver Program allows British nationals into America for 90 days at a time however you will need to obtain a Electronic System for Travel Authorisation (ESTA) pass before you travel to the US. If you have an extended passport for 12 month then this will only be accepted in rare cases.

Travel Advice : Uruguay
Most criminal activities occur in Montevideo. The downtown and port areas are not good to walk alone in or after dark. Take a taxi into these areas if you need to go there. Keep your passport in a safe place and carry a certified photocopy of you passport with the front-page and visa and entry stamps visible. More than 20,000 British nationals visit Uruguay each year. Travel Advice : Uzbekistan
Stay away from the borders with Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Afghanistan when in Uzbekistan. Most British nationals who do enter Uzbekistan have trouble free arrivals and stays. Certain medicines may be a problem when you arrive so ensure you have a prescription for them when you arrive. If you have any problems or concerns then contact the British Embassy in Uzbekistan for assistance.
Travel Advice : Venezuela
With an ongoing drug war the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advise against all travel to within 80km (50 miles) of the Colombian border while in Venezuela. There have also been violent protests in Merida City and this has affected the tourist areas. Always speak to your local travel agent before booking. Street crime is high however with more than 9,000 British nationals visiting Venezuela there has been few incidents for consular assistance. Travel Advice : Vietnam
There have been a number of anti-China protests in 2014 but this has died down. The Tropical cyclones affect the eastern coastal regions. The season normally runs from May to November and you need to remember this if you are coming to Vietnam on holiday.
