This is the renew British passport page on the website. You need to complete the forms correctly as 1 in every 8 applications for a British passport which needs to be renewed is rejected as being incomplete. There are a number of forms each for a different type of passport depending on your age or if it is a ‘Smart’ passport or not. They are listed below with the documents linked from the Home Affairs website.

Also note that you need to have the support documents as well. Also note that the photo requirements for your passport must meet the IPS standard.

Note this is to renew your British passport and not a new application. You can apply to renew your passport if

  • You still have your last passport
  • It is still undamaged
  • You do not need to change your nationality status or name.
  • Please ensure your photographs meet IPS standards

The New ‘Smart’ Passport Application Form

You may wish to use the ‘Smart’ Passport Application form. This can be used for adult, child and BNO applications. You can download it and fill it out on your computer, but you will need to print it so you can sign it. It will prompt you to answer the questions and will help the embassy abroad to produce your passport more quickly and efficiently.

Only use this form if you are:

  • aged 16 or older and
  • a UK Citizen applying overseas or
  • a British Overseas Territories Citizen or

  • a British National (Overseas).  These are British nationals who were either born in or have a close connection with Hong Kong and hold a Hong Kong ID Card; and
  • aged 16 or older

From Tuesday 10 December 2013, the application process will be centralised and British nationals, including British National (Overseas) passport holders, in Hong Kong should submit their passport application to Her Majesty’s Passport Office in the UK. Lost/Stolen Passports

If you haven’t already reported the loss or theft, you must include form LS01 with your passport application. Note that you need to report a lost or stolen passport at the British Embassy in the country you are located and also the local police force as the embassy would want the report.

Passport Payment

Fill in a ‘Paying by credit card or debit card’ form for each passport you’re applying for and submit it with your application. Your credit or debit card will be charged in sterling. You can use Mastercard, Visa, Electron, Diners Club and JCB.

UK passport renewal in USA cost

Generally, the cost of renewing a UK passport overseas is usually higher than in the UK. You can find the most up-to-date information on fees and the renewal process on the official website of the UK government’s passport office. Alternatively, you can contact the British embassy or consulate in the USA for further assistance. A standard passport is £94 for an adult, and £61 for a child. Plus a £19.86 courier fee.
