Honorary Consulates in Ecuador

The British Embassy utilizes volunteer Honorary Consuls in key regions outside of the capital. These officials provide local liaison support and emergency assistance (such as visiting hospitals or helping during a natural disaster), but they cannot issue passports, register life events, or process visas.

The embassy manages network operations across these locations:

  • Guayaquil: Serves British nationals in Ecuador’s primary port city and coastal provinces.

  • The Galápagos Islands (Puerto Ayora): Focuses heavily on tourist emergencies, accidents, or lost travel documentation on the islands.

  • Cuenca: Covers the southern provinces of Azuay and Cañar, serving the local British expat community.

Note: Initial contact for any honorary consulate should be funneled through the main Quito Embassy phone number.

Registering a Birth or Death

The British Embassy in Quito no longer processes or registers births or deaths on-site. These services are centralized and managed remotely by a specialist unit in the United Kingdom.

1. Registering a Birth

If your child is born in Ecuador to at least one British parent, registering the birth with the UK government is optional (a local Ecuadorian certificate is legally sufficient), but it allows you to get a UK consular birth registration certificate.

  • The Process:

    1. First, register the birth locally with the Ecuadorian civil registry (Registro Civil) to get an official local certificate.

    2. Apply and pay online through the official GOV.UK birth registration portal.

    3. Mail the original Ecuadorian documents (translated if required) and parents’ documents directly to the Overseas Registration Unit in the UK.

  • Important: This process does not automatically grant a passport. You must apply for a first child British passport separately.

2. Registering a Death

If a British national passes away in Ecuador, the death must first be registered with the local Ecuadorian authorities.

The Process:

    1. Obtain the local Ecuadorian death certificate.

    2. Register the death online with the UK government via the GOV.UK death registration portal.

    3. Pay the registration fees online and submit the required paperwork to the UK-based Overseas Registration Unit.

  • Consular Support: While the Quito embassy team does not issue the certificates, they will provide immediate welfare support to grieving families, including lists of local English-speaking funeral directors and guidance on the repatriation of remains.

The British Embassy in Quito does not process or make decisions on visa applications. All applications are handled digitally by UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) and processed through a third-party partner.
