This view has however changed this year with documents being made available from the 1980’s that Britain had no intention of allowing Hong Kong residents to become British nationals and that it was not the Chinese government after all.

British ConsulateAn interest thought has come up with regards to the BNO passport and if it will ever amount to anything and should it allow Hong Kong residents the right to abode in Britain without creating a new problem that many do not think about. Chinese citizens are not allowed to legally hold dual citizenship and the Chinese government has shown that they have no issue revoking citizenship of Chinese nationals with dual nationalities.

Residents in Hong Kong Seek British Passports

British EmbassyNow 20 years since its return to China, Hong Kong residents are again rushing to secure British passports as a safety net in the event of more possible problems ahead such as social unrest or the erosion of civil liberties in Hong Kong. With  the “occupy” street protests of 2014, and increasing calls for independence more residents in Hong Kong are looking for a way out in the event of any unrest. The BNO passport applications are still being renewed in Hong Kong as an insurance policy.
