300,000 HK residents to get British Citizenship
In an about turn to the BNO (British National Overseas) issue, Dominic Raab the foreign secretary has come to pledge to extend the British visa rights for all BNO passport holders and also to facilitate their path to British citizenship. This will happen unless Beijing changes its stance on security laws in Hong Kong.
UK lawmaker wants to shorten BNO naturalisation
After more than 4,000 people petitioned the UK government, Steve Double, a Conservative MP on July 10 proposed a motion to shorten the time needed for tier 4 and 5 BNO citizens to naturalise into British Nationals from 10 to five years. This would make BNO holders eligible for citizenship much earlier.

It was always the premise of the press that the main reason why BNO holders cannot get dual nationality was because the Chinese government would never allow it. This view has however changed this year with documents being made available from the 1980’s that Britain had no intention of allowing Hong Kong residents to become British nationals and that it was not the Chinese government after all.
